We started out on Friday, October 13, 2006, at Erwin’s Apple Orchard with Kiara’s classmates. I was so cold that instead of being there until noon we all left at about 10:30am. We picked apples and pumpkins. We dropped off our pumpkins at my brother-in-law and sister-in-law’s house so that ‘Aunt Ann’ can ‘pumpkin sit’ our pumpkins. We went home to finish packing and ran a few errands and then off we went on our big trip. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Chambersburg, PA. It was really nice.

Saturday was our second day. We traveled to Gettysburg, PA. We started out in the Robert E. Lee Museum, and then we went to the Gettysburg Battlefield. Instead of following some formal tour, we did our own tour. The bus tour would take 2 hours, so I   thought we would do it faster but I wanted to stop for almost everything. It ended up taking 6 hours. When we were done, we went to dinner at the Appalachian Brewing Company. It was so small… (I know… we are spoiled.)  The beers were weak, but the food was ok.  We had a shredded pork pizza, while Kiara had grilled cheese with white cheese. Following dinner, off we went to Harrisburg, PA, where we stayed at a La Quinta Hotel.

Sunday was our third day.  That was nice because the breakfast was ‘make your own waffles.’ We went to the Hershey Park in the Dark. I actually thought it would be bigger and more but it was ok. We started out with Kiara’s trick or treating as a family of vampires. We rode some rides. We went on a roller coaster that I thought was just a regular wooden roller coaster but it had a loop and Kiara did not like it but she did not cry on the ride. She complained a lot afterwards but she has now forgotten about it.

Monday was our fourth day and we were still at La Quinta.  We had a great breakfast again. We went to Hershey’s World of Chocolate. Kiara became an employee at the Hershey Factory and got a chance to put Hershey Kisses in a little container and then put it on a conveyer belt. It was pretty cool. It smelled great. That night, we traveled to New Jersey, where we stayed at the Super 8 in New Jersey.

Tuesday was our fifth day. We did not eat breakfast that morning, but took a bus to Manhattan NY instead. We went to Times Square. We stopped at the biggest Toys-R-Us store, where they have a huge Barbie dollhouse that you can walk through and shop. Kiara saw Geoffrey there. They have a large Ferris wheel inside the store. We walked down Broadway and stopped at St. Patrick’s Church. It was beautiful. We went to McDonald’s and JR Cigar’s, where Ray went crazy with the choices. (I let him get a couple of cigars.) We went to the Ed Sullivan Theatre (home of The Late Show with David Letterman… he was on hiatus) and to the NBC Building at Rockefeller Center. After all of the sightseeing, it was time to go back to the hotel. We took Kiara on the subway and Wow! It is packed like sardines between 5pm to 8pm. A nice lady gave Kiara a seat. Kiara said she did not like it because it was not fast enough. It was packed so she could not see out the window. We rode the bus back to the hotel and the bus driver yelled at us.  She said she passed our bus stop, but she would let us off. (Gee lady… thanks!)

Wednesday was our sixth day and we ate breakfast in the room. We checked out of our room and packed the car. Oh, and as a parting gift, I found a used condom on our windshield. (Nice!) We left our car in the hotel parking lot and went back to Manhattan. We started on the bus to get on the subway to go to the Statue of Liberty. From there we went to the World Trade Center. Oh wow, it was very hard to be there. I know all of the buildings were torn down, but the overwhelming sadness you felt for all the people who died there. Near the WTC site, we saw the soup shop from Seinfeld show (NO SOUP FOR YOU!)

We went back to the hotel on the bus and a very nice girl sat next to me. She said she was a student who wants to become a baker. She offered me a cookie and I said thank you but no. She offered Kiara a cookie and she had no problem taking it. Kiara ended up with chocolate on her face. We got back to the hotel to get into our car, and then off we went on our long drive to Niagara Falls.

Thursday was our seventh day and we end up at our hotel in Niagara Falls, Canada, at 4am. We got in our rooms and went right to sleep. Of course, we missed breakfast, so we ate lunch at Applebee’s. After lunch, we head down the hill and we are thinking of paying to ride down the side of the hill to see the falls but it’s raining too hard, so we decided to go back to the room and rest. After a rest, we went swimming in the pool. We got hungry, and after calling a lot of pizza places, we finally got pizza delivered.

Friday was our seventh day. We checked out of our hotel and we went sightseeing. We saw the falls, and then we went shopping and rode down the side of the hill. We looked everywhere for a hat that Kiara out grew. We bought her a hat two years ago in Niagara Falls and she loves it, but no luck. (I think I am going to check the web.) After that, we starting walking back to the hotel, but overshot it. We finally got there and we started our drive home.

We had a great vacation but we all were tired. Ray will have the pictures up on Flickr soon.

Gravatar Image1 - While not as far a drive for us as you, we, too, have been to Harrisburg. Used it as a stopping point before going to Hershey. While there, we took in a Senators game:

I love minor league baseball and had the entire family go with me. Got some autographs of some players that ended up with the Cleveland Indians. The next day! Overall, it was a great trip, and the kids want to go back.

Great post!
